The groups below show each set, the grammar each verb needs, email phrasing and opposites. Related verbs have pages of their own: recognize, accept and appreciate.

From own up to concede: the acknowledge synonym strip

All five chips belong to the admitting sense, ordered from chatty to courtroom. Own up to is spoken English and suggests a fault. Admit is plain and common. Accept sounds calm, without guilt: I accept the point. Recognize is measured and polite. Concede belongs to debate and law, where you give up a point to an opponent.

In a heated meeting, I accept that sounds more gracious than I admit that, which can sound like losing.

Grammar each verb needs

Acknowledge takes a noun or a that clause: acknowledge the problem, acknowledge that it failed. Most swaps follow suit, with a few twists.

  • Admit takes doing or to doing: she admitted taking the pen, she admitted to taking it.
  • Concede usually takes that or a noun: he conceded defeat.
  • Credit needs with: they credited her with the idea.
  • Thank needs for: we thank the staff for their patience.
  • Respond needs to: please respond to this note.

In emails and formal letters

Office mail often says please acknowledge receipt. Plainer choices: please confirm you received this or let me know it arrived. When you reply, thanks, received is enough for a colleague; I confirm receipt of your letter suits legal or official mail.

Team email: "I want to acknowledge Priya for her work on the launch." Rewritten: "I want to thank Priya for her work on the launch." Thank is warmer and tells everyone exactly what you mean.

Acknowledged, acknowledging and the noun

For acknowledged as an adjective, try recognized, accepted or established: an acknowledged expert is a recognized expert. When a sentence opens with acknowledging, admitting or granting often reads more smoothly. The noun acknowledgment can become recognition, admission or thanks. Americans usually spell it acknowledgment; British writers prefer acknowledgement.

Antonyms of acknowledge

For truths, the opposite is deny. For people and messages, it is ignore, disregard or brush off. For credit, overlook fits when the slight was not on purpose.

  • He denied any part in the mix-up.
  • Her early research was overlooked for years.

Frequently asked questions

Which word for acknowledge sounds most polite at work?

Recognize is polite and neutral: we recognize the delay caused trouble. Thank is warmer when you mean credit for someone's effort.

Is admit the same as acknowledge?

Nearly, but admit often suggests reluctance or guilt. Acknowledge sounds more neutral and more formal.

How can I acknowledge an email without sounding stiff?

Short lines work: got it, thanks, or thanks, I will look at this today. Save confirm receipt for formal or legal messages.

When should I use concede?

Use it when you accept a point in an argument, often against your own side: I concede the cost is high. It suits debates, essays and negotiations.

Which verbs are the reverse of acknowledge?

Deny, ignore and dismiss are the main antonyms. Choose deny for facts and ignore for people or messages.

Does appreciate ever work in place of acknowledge?

Only when you mean thanks or value: I appreciate your help. It does not work for admitting facts, so you cannot appreciate a mistake in that sense.
