Said Synonym Ideas for Dialogue, Reports and Essays

Describing wordsVerbStory writingUpdated 26 Oct 2026

A said synonym should tell the reader something said does not: replied, explained, whispered, added and argued each add direction, purpose, volume or attitude. That extra detail is useful, but only when it matches the line being spoken.

Each list below gives another word for said, sorted by mood and volume, covers the present forms says and say, and explains when plain said is actually the better choice. Story writers and report writers need different lists, so both are here.

Whispered to shouted

The chip strip shows volume. Whispered is barely audible. Murmured is soft and often warm. Stated is level and clear. Exclaimed carries surprise or excitement. Shouted is the loudest. Muttered sits near murmured in volume but adds grumbling, so the two are not swaps for each other.

When plain said is the right word

Many editors advise keeping said for most dialogue. Readers skip over it, so the words inside the quotes do the work. A page full of chortled, opined and expostulated feels showy. Use a stronger verb when the manner really matters, and let action beats carry the rest.

Story draft: "I'm fine," she said angrily. Revision: "I'm fine," she snapped. One verb replaces a verb and an adverb, and the tone is clearer.

Says and say: present tense swaps

For a says synonym in essays and reports, the neutral choices are states, notes, argues, suggests, claims and explains. Each reports a source differently.

  • The author says that cities need trees becomes the author argues that cities need trees.
  • The report says sales fell becomes the report shows that sales fell.
  • The sign says no parking becomes the sign reads no parking.

For a say synonym in everyday speech, try mention, tell, express or put: how would you put it? See tell synonyms and express synonyms for more.

Reporting verbs carry a judgment

In academic writing, the verb you choose shows how you view the source. States and notes are neutral. Argues and suggests show a position. Claims can hint you doubt it. Admits implies reluctance. Reveals implies new information. Choose deliberately; see essay and academic words for tone advice. For a source that supports your view, explains or demonstrates reads well.

Mistakes with speech verbs

Some verbs cannot introduce speech because they are not ways of talking: he grinned, she sighed, they nodded. Others change the grammar: you tell someone, but you say something. "She told that she was tired" needs a person: she told us that she was tired. And "he goes" or "I was like" for said belong only in casual speech or dialogue.

Frequently asked questions

Which said synonyms suit formal reports?

Stated, remarked and noted are formal. In academic writing, asserted and maintained show that the speaker held a firm position.

What is another word for says in an essay?

Argues, suggests, states and explains work best. Pick the one that matches how strongly the source makes its point.

Should I avoid said in stories?

No. Said is nearly invisible to readers and keeps dialogue moving. Swap it only when how a line was spoken really matters.

What is a quiet word for said?

Whispered, murmured and breathed are quiet. Muttered is quiet too but adds a grumbling tone.

What is a loud word for said?

Shouted, yelled, roared and called out. Exclaimed is loud with surprise rather than anger.

What is the difference between say and tell?

Tell needs a listener as its object: tell me. Say focuses on the words: say hello. That is why you cannot write she said me.
