Action verbs carry a sentence forward, and swapping a vague one like get, do or make for obtain, perform or build usually makes the whole line clearer. A sharp verb also lets you cut adverbs: ran quickly becomes sprinted.
This hub sorts the verbs with their own synonym page into families by meaning. Each linked verb leads to a page listing its replacements by meaning, the grammar each one takes and sentences showing the swap. Forms like shows, showed and showing are covered on the word pages too.

Families of action verbs
Grouping verbs by job makes the right one easier to find. Start with the family, then compare the members.
| Family | Verbs with their own page |
|---|---|
| Making and building | create, build, produce, design, generate, establish |
| Changing | change, transform, adapt, shift, update, optimize |
| Growing and shrinking | increase, expand, grow, reduce, decrease, decline |
| Showing | show, display, exhibit, reveal, portray, depict |
| Helping and giving | help, support, enable, empower, give, offer |
| Stopping and blocking | stop, prevent, hinder, avoid, remove, mitigate |

Upgrading get, do and make
These three verbs can mean almost anything, which is exactly the problem. Ask what really happened.
- Get a refund becomes receive a refund; get a permit becomes obtain a permit; get better becomes improve. See receive, gain.
- Do a survey becomes conduct a survey; do the task well becomes perform well; do a fix becomes repair. See conduct.
- Make a decision becomes decide; make a change becomes change; make sure becomes ensure or confirm.
A work message: "Can you do a check of the invoices and get back to me?" Revised: "Can you review the invoices and reply by noon?" Two vague verbs became two exact ones, and the request got shorter.
Verbs of thinking and knowing
Mental verbs are not always visible actions, but they still benefit from precision. think, believe, consider, realize, understand, know differ in certainty: consider weighs, believe commits, realize marks a sudden moment of understanding. discover, figure out, identify, determine describe finding an answer, with figure out the casual one and determine the formal one.
For memory, remember, recognize, acknowledge overlap only partly. Acknowledge means admitting or noting something, not recalling it.
Talking and persuading
Speech verbs show attitude. tell, inform, mention, clarify, express pass on information at different levels of detail. ask, request, demand, urge rise in pressure, from polite to insistent. To change minds, persuade, convince, encourage, inspire work, though persuade stresses action and convince stresses belief: you persuade someone to go, you convince them that it is true.
Moving, fighting and trying
Some verb families describe effort against resistance. try, attempt, strive, pursue, seek move from everyday to formal; strive suggests long, hard effort, and seek fits goals and advice. fight, attack, overcome, resolve, handle deal with obstacles, with overcome marking success and handle marking calm control.
Movement verbs such as move, push, follow, escape, leave gain force when made specific: leave becomes slip out, push becomes shove, escape becomes break free.
Choosing action verbs for each setting
Resumes: past tense, concrete results. Led, built, reduced, launched. Our guide to resume and work vocabulary goes further.
Essays: analytical verbs such as examine, argue, illustrate and reveal. More of these live in our academic vocabulary section.
Stories: physical, sensory verbs. Grabbed, stumbled, whispered. These rarely need adverbs.
Chat and email: short, plain verbs. Fix, send, check, try. A text that says I will facilitate the pickup sounds stiff; I will grab it sounds human.
Grammar traps when you swap
Synonyms do not always share grammar. You help someone do something, but you assist someone with something. You prevent a problem from happening, while you avoid doing it. You allow someone to leave, but you let them leave with no to.
Affect and effect trip up even careful writers. affect is the usual verb (the rain affected traffic); effect as a verb means to bring about, as in effect a change, and is rare.
Cutting adverbs with a better verb
Many adverbs are patches on a weak verb. Replace the pair with one word and the sentence gets tighter.
- Walked slowly becomes strolled or trudged.
- Said quietly becomes murmured.
- Looked closely becomes examined or studied.
- Greatly increased becomes surged or soared.
- Strongly disliked becomes loathed.
Keep the adverb when it adds information the verb cannot, such as finished early.
Frequently asked questions
What are action verbs?
Action verbs describe something a subject does, physically or mentally, such as run, build, decide or explain. They contrast with linking verbs like be and seem, which only connect a subject to a description.
Which action verbs are strongest for writing?
Specific ones beat general ones. Build, cut, launch, reveal and persuade create a clear picture, while do, get and make need more words around them.
Is think an action verb?
Yes. Mental actions such as think, decide and remember count as action verbs, even though nothing visible happens.
How do I avoid using the same verb over and over?
Open the synonym page for the repeated verb and choose by sense. Rotating verbs only for variety can change your meaning, so check each swap fits.
Are formal verbs like utilize better than use?
Usually not. Use is clear and short; utilize adds length without meaning in most sentences. Save formal verbs for places where they say something more exact.
