Challenge Synonym Guide: Hard Tasks, Dares and Disputes

Action verbsNounVerbUpdated 26 Oct 2026

Picking a challenge synonym means deciding which of three ideas you need: a hard task (difficulty, hurdle, obstacle), a call to compete (dare, contest), or doubt about a claim (question, dispute). The verb follows the same split.

Inside: another word for challenge in each sense, advice on another word for challenges in interviews and reports, and the words that look similar but carry a different load. Close relatives have their own pages: obstacle, difficulty and overcome.

The difficulty scale, from test to uphill battle

The chips at the top rise from mild to strong. A test checks what you can do. A hurdle is one thing to clear before you move on. A struggle takes ongoing effort. An ordeal is painful and draining to live through, and an uphill battle is a long effort against the odds.

Another word for challenges at work and in interviews

Interviewers love the question tell me about a challenge you faced. In the answer, you can vary the word with difficulties, setbacks, obstacles or hurdles, then show how you dealt with them.

Cover letter line: "I enjoy challenges and solving challenges." Better: "I enjoy hard problems, and in my last role I cleared a backlog that had stalled the team for months." The second version drops the repeat and proves the claim.

In reports, challenges is often a soft word for problems or issues. Choose the plainer word if readers need to know something is actually broken.

Challenge synonym traps

Problem and crisis are heavier and suggest something has already gone wrong. Threat means possible harm, not difficulty. Attack is far stronger than challenge as a verb: you can challenge an idea politely, but attacking it sounds hostile. And challenged as a polite word for disabled is outdated; use direct, respectful language instead.

The adjective challenging is covered separately on the challenging synonyms page.

Idioms that can stand in

Spoken English has plenty of colorful swaps. Throw down the gauntlet means to issue a challenge. A tough nut to crack is a hard problem. Put to the test replaces the verb: the storm put the new roof to the test. Raise the bar means to set a harder standard. Use these in talks and blogs more than in formal papers.

Opposites of challenge

For the noun, something easy is a breeze or a cinch (both casual), or simply easy work. For the verb, the reverse of disputing is to accept, agree with, support or concede: the team conceded the point.
