However Synonym Choices, With the Punctuation That Goes With Them

Linking wordsTransition wordEssay wordUpdated 26 Oct 2026

A however synonym has to do two jobs: show a contrast and fit the punctuation of your sentence. But, yet, still, nevertheless and on the other hand are the most useful, and they do not all sit in the same spot.

Essays lean on however so heavily that teachers start circling it. The sections below pair each level of formality with another word for however, plus the comma and semicolon rules, and the less common sense of however that means "no matter how".

Swatch at a glance

  • Best swaps

    but, yet, nevertheless, still
  • Part of speech

    Adverb (transition), sometimes conjunction
  • Most formal

    notwithstanding, nonetheless, conversely
  • Most casual

    but, still, though
  • Antonyms

None. Transition words of addition, such as moreover, point the other way.
  • Watch out

But joins two clauses with a comma. Nevertheless cannot: use a period or semicolon before it.

Picking a however synonym by punctuation

This is where most swaps go wrong. However is an adverb, so it cannot join two full sentences with only a comma. Some of its synonyms can, and some cannot.

WordTypeCorrect pattern
but, yetconjunctionIt rained, but we played.
although, while, whereassubordinatorAlthough it rained, we played.
nevertheless, nonetheless, stilladverbIt rained; nevertheless, we played.
on the other hand, in contrastphraseCity life is fast. On the other hand, it is lively.

A quick test: if you can drop the word in after a period and the sentence still works, it behaves like however.

Strength and tone of each contrast word

The strip above runs casual to formal. But is short and plain. Still adds a touch of persistence: the plan was risky; still, it worked. Even so admits the first point fully before turning. Nonetheless and nevertheless are formal twins with the same meaning. Notwithstanding is the most formal and mostly found in legal or academic prose.

For a softer turn, that said and having said that sound conversational but still fine in many reports.

Swaps in essays and emails

  • The data is strong. However, the sample is small becomes the data is strong, but the sample is small.
  • Prices rose. However, demand held steady becomes prices rose; nonetheless, demand held steady.
  • Cats are independent. However, dogs need company becomes cats are independent, whereas dogs need company.
  • I like the idea. However, the timing is tight becomes I like the idea. That said, the timing is tight.

A work email: "I can join the call. However, I will need to leave at three." Softer version: "I can join the call, though I will need to leave at three." Placing though after the main clause keeps the tone relaxed and polite.

When to use a different contrast word entirely

Not every contrast needs a however-style adverb. Although and even though fold the contrast into one sentence. Despite takes a noun: despite the rain. Conversely means the reverse is true, so use it only for mirror situations: heat expands metal; conversely, cold shrinks it.

The transition words hub groups these by job, which helps when an essay needs variety.

The other however: no matter how

However also means "in whatever way" or "to whatever degree". In that sense the swaps are no matter how and regardless of how.

  • However hard I try, the lid sticks becomes no matter how hard I try, the lid sticks.
  • Arrange the chairs however you like becomes arrange the chairs any way you like.

Here but or nevertheless would make no sense, so check which however you have before swapping.

Common slips with contrast words

Do not stack two of them: "but however" or "yet nevertheless" says the same thing twice. Do not start every paragraph with a contrast word, or the essay will feel like it keeps changing its mind. And do not use moreover or furthermore as a however synonym; they add a point rather than oppose one.
