Effect, influence or consequence

These three are not quite equal. Effect is the neutral result of a cause. Influence is softer and slower; it shapes things over time without forcing them. Consequence usually follows an action and often sounds negative. Repercussions are unwanted results that spread outward, and implications are results you can predict but have not seen yet. Bearing is the mildest: the weather had no bearing on the result.

The colored chips above trace that rise from bearing to repercussions.

An essay line: "Social media impacts teens and the impact is big." Revised: "Social media shapes how teens see themselves, and the effect on sleep is clear." The swap removes the repeat and makes each verb do real work.

Affect versus effect in one minute

Most of the time, affect is the verb and effect is the noun: noise affects sleep; noise has an effect on sleep. One memory trick: the action word starts with a, like action. The rare exceptions are to effect change (to bring it about) and affect as a psychology noun for visible emotion. When in doubt, swapping impact for one of these two clears up the sentence. More confusable pairs are explained under essay and academic words.

Words for a negative impact

If the result is bad, say so with a sharper word. Harm and damage are direct. Toll works in the phrase take a toll on: the long shifts took a toll on her health. Setback suits progress that went backward. Fallout is informal for messy results after a scandal or mistake. Positive impact, in turn, can become benefit, boost or gain.

Look-alikes that miss

Impression is about how something seems to people, not what it changes. Importance is how much something matters, which is related but separate. Impactful is common in business but strict editors avoid it; try effective, powerful or memorable instead. If something truly had no impact, write that it had no effect or that it was irrelevant to the outcome.
