From pick up to attain

Pick up, get, earn, acquire, attain: that strip climbs from chatty to stately. Pick up sounds relaxed and hints that the learning came easily. Get is plain and safe anywhere. Earn adds the idea that you deserved it. Acquire is the safe pick for reports and essays. Attain feels stately and tends to pair with goals, levels or status.

Garner is formal too, but it mostly pairs with attention, praise or support: the proposal garnered wide support.

Before and after swaps

  • He gained a lot of experience abroad becomes he acquired a lot of experience abroad.
  • Our side gained the lead after the break becomes our side took the lead.

On a resume, "Gained experience in budgeting" sounds passive. "Developed budgeting skills across three departments" shows action and scope, and recruiters look for both.

Synonyms for gained, gaining and gains

Gained: acquired, earned, won, secured, put on. In past tense the swap keeps the same form: she gained ground becomes she made up ground.

Gaining: building, picking up, collecting, climbing. Gaining traction is a set phrase; you can say catching on in casual speech.

Gains (noun): profits, returns, improvements, increases, advances. Strength gains at the gym are improvements, while gains on a stock are returns or profits. See the increase synonyms page for words about numbers going up.

Swaps that change the meaning

Achieve works for goals and results, not for objects. You can achieve a target, but you cannot achieve a new laptop. Receive means something was given to you, which removes the effort that gain often implies. Grow needs the thing itself to get bigger: a business grows, but you gain customers.

Gain on someone means to close the distance in a race or chase. The swap is catch up with, not acquire.

Opposite of gain, with examples

Lose is the direct antonym for almost every sense. Shed and drop suit weight. Forfeit is losing a thing because of a rule or penalty, and sacrifice means giving it up on purpose.

  • She shed the extra weight by spring.
  • The club forfeited the match after missing the deadline.

For the noun, a loss, a drop or a decline balance a gain.

Phrases that can stand in for gain

Fixed phrases often sound more natural than a single verb. Gain ground becomes make headway or make progress. Gain access becomes get into. Gain an edge becomes get ahead. Gain insight becomes learn or come to understand. If the meaning is simply getting, the get synonyms page has more casual options.
