Cause Synonym Guide: Verbs, Nouns and Caused By Swaps

Action verbsVerbNounUpdated 26 Oct 2026

A cause synonym can be a verb or a noun, and the two lists barely overlap. As a verb, try lead to, result in, bring about or trigger. As a noun, reason, source and root are the usual swaps, while movement or mission fit a cause people fight for.

Each verb carries a tone. Trigger is sudden, bring about is often deliberate, and provoke usually means a bad reaction.

The casual to formal strip

Lead to is relaxed and clear. Result in fits reports. Bring about sounds purposeful. Give rise to is academic and slower. Engender is rare and literary, used for feelings or attitudes: kindness engenders trust. When in doubt, the left side of the strip is easier to read.

Caused synonym and caused by swaps

In the past tense, keep the swap's form: the leak caused damage becomes the leak led to damage or the leak resulted in damage. The passive phrase caused by has its own set:

  • Delays caused by snow become delays due to snow.
  • A rash caused by the sun becomes a rash brought on by the sun.
  • The fire was caused by a candle becomes the fire was started by a candle.
  • Losses caused by fraud become losses stemming from fraud.

Cause as a noun: reasons and missions

The cause of a problem is its reason, source, root or origin. Root suggests the deepest cause, often hidden. Factor means one of several causes. Catalyst speeds up a change that was coming anyway; the catalyst page explains that shade.

A cause you support is a movement, mission or campaign. Crusade sounds dramatic. Charity means the group, not the goal.

A fundraising note says: "Thank you for supporting our cause." To sound warmer: "Thank you for backing our mission to clean the river." Naming the goal makes the thanks personal.

Causes synonym in sentences

  • Smoking causes disease becomes smoking leads to disease.
  • The heat causes the metal to bend becomes the heat makes the metal bend.
  • What causes the noise becomes what is behind the noise (casual).
  • The causes of the war becomes the roots of the war.
  • Skipping breakfast causes fatigue becomes skipping breakfast contributes to fatigue when it is only one factor.

Lookalikes and opposites

Affect and influence change something that already exists, while cause brings it into being. Blame adds guilt. On the other side, the noun cause is the opposite of effect, result and consequence. The verb's opposites are prevent, stop and avert: quick action averted a flood.
