Determine Synonym Finder: Four Senses, Many Better Verbs

Action verbsVerbScience wordUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The right determine synonym hangs on your purpose: are you finding a fact, measuring something, making a choice or naming the cause of a result? Establish, figure out, decide, calculate and shape each own one of those jobs.

Determine shows up everywhere in school and work writing, from lab reports ("we determined the boiling point") to policy ("income determines eligibility"). Because it is so flexible, readers often see it three times in one page. Use the groups below to swap in a sharper verb.

Four ways to read determine

SenseSwap inLine to try
Find out a factestablish, identify, figure outDetectives established when the alarm failed.
Measurecalculate, measure, gaugeWe measured the water hardness.
Choosedecide, settle, fixThe club fixed a date for the vote.
Control an outcomeshape, govern, dictateSoil type dictates which crops grow well.

Notice the grammar shift in the last row. In that sense the subject is a cause, not a person, so person verbs like figure out stop working.

How formal is each option

The chip strip climbs from talk to technical writing. Figure out and work out are spoken and friendly. Find out suggests you looked something up or asked. Establish carries proof: you showed it is true. Ascertain is the stiffest and best kept for legal or scientific prose.

For most essays, establish or identify gives the right tone without sounding like a court filing.

Determine synonym swaps in context

  • Tests will determine the cause of the leak becomes tests will pin down the cause of the leak.
  • We need to determine the total cost becomes we need to calculate the total cost.
  • The judges will determine the winner becomes the judges will decide the winner.
  • Your habits determine your health becomes your habits shape your health.
  • Researchers determined that the sample was old becomes researchers concluded the sample was old.
  • Let me determine who is free on Friday becomes let me find out who is free on Friday.

A lab report reads: "We determined the mass, then determined the volume, then determined density." Rewritten: "We weighed the sample, measured its volume and calculated the density." Each verb now names the actual step.

Determines, determined, determining

For determines in a cause sentence, governs, controls or influences are natural: "Altitude governs how fast water boils." Influences is softer, since it allows other causes too.

For determined as a past verb, use found, established or concluded. For determining, try deciding or identifying: "identifying the best supplier took a week." A determining factor can become a deciding factor or key factor.

Choosing for school, work and science

Science and lab work: measure, calculate, quantify and establish are precise. Avoid figure out in a formal report.

Work emails: confirm, decide and work out keep things clear: "Can we confirm the budget by Monday?"

Essays: shape and influence suit cause-and-effect arguments. For more formal verbs, open academic writing words.

Near misses to avoid

Decide and discover are not interchangeable. You decide what to do, but you discover what is already true. Affect is weaker than determine: rain affects the game, but the score determines the winner. Predict is about the future and does not fit a measured fact.

Also watch resolve: it can mean decide firmly, but readers may hear fix a problem instead.

Antonyms and opposite ideas

Determine has no single opposite, so match the sense. Against finding out, use guess or overlook. Against deciding, use waver, hesitate or leave open.

  • We left the date open until everyone replied.
  • She wavered between two offers for days.

Frequently asked questions

Which word means determine in a science report?

Measure, calculate and establish are the clearest. Ascertain also works but can sound heavy if used often.

Is decide the same as determine?

Only in the choosing sense. When the meaning is finding a fact or causing a result, decide does not fit. Check which sense your sentence uses.

Can I write figure out instead of determine?

Yes in speech, chats and informal emails. In academic writing it reads a little loose, so prefer establish or identify.

What replaces determine when a cause controls an outcome?

Shape, govern, dictate and control all work, from softest to firmest. Influence is the gentlest because it admits other causes.

What is the noun form, and what are its synonyms?

Determination covers two ideas. As finding something out, swap it for assessment or finding. As firm purpose, try resolve or grit.

Which antonym fits determine?

Guess works against finding out, and waver or hesitate work against making a choice. There is no one word that covers every sense.
