Prevent Synonym Guide: Stop, Avert, Block and Hinder

Action verbsVerbFormal and casualUpdated 26 Oct 2026

Every prevent synonym has its own strength. Stop is plain and complete, avert means a disaster was turned away, avoid means you kept clear of it, hinder only slows things down, and prohibit forbids by rule. Picking well tells your reader exactly how much was stopped.

The sections that follow list another word for prevent in each sense, a mild to strong scale, the preposition rules that catch writers out and the opposites.

Prevent synonym strength, mild to strong

On the chip strip, discourage is the softest: it makes someone less likely to act. Hinder puts obstacles in the way. Block closes the path. Stop ends the action. Prohibit uses the power of a rule or a law, so it is about permission, not physical force. Choose the level that matches what really happened, especially in reports and safety notes.

Prepositions and patterns

Prevent takes from plus an ing verb: prevent pipes from freezing. Several swaps follow the same pattern: stop, keep, bar, prohibit and discourage (stop pipes from freezing, discourage kids from vaping). Others never take from.

  • Avoid takes the ing verb directly: avoid getting sick.
  • Avert and forestall take a noun: avert a crisis.
  • Hinder can take a person plus from, or just a noun: hinder progress.
  • Ban takes a noun: ban phones in class.

The avoid synonyms page covers keeping away from something in more depth.

Swaps in everyday sentences

  • Wash your hands to prevent illness becomes wash your hands to ward off illness.
  • The new rule prevents parking on the grass becomes the new rule prohibits parking on the grass.
  • Talks prevented a strike becomes talks averted a strike.
  • Heavy rain prevented progress becomes heavy rain slowed progress, if work still continued.
  • Fixing small leaks prevents bigger problems becomes fixing small leaks heads off bigger problems.

Email to a landlord: "Please fix the window to prevent damage." Clearer: "Please fix the window before rain gets in and damages the floor." Naming the risk often works better than any synonym.

Prevented, preventing and prevention

For prevented, try averted, blocked, headed off or stopped. For preventing, try avoiding, guarding against or warding off. The noun prevention pairs with avoidance, protection, deterrence and control: fire prevention becomes fire safety in friendly writing. The adjective preventive, or preventative, means protective or precautionary.

Health leaflet: "Preventing the flu is easy." Warmer: "Guarding against the flu takes two simple steps."

Lookalike words with a twist

Avoid is about your own choice to stay clear; prevent is about stopping something happening at all, often to others. Forbid is personal and strict, like a parent forbidding a party. Thwart and foil mean stopping someone's plan, usually a bad one, so "the guard foiled the theft" works but "sunscreen foils sunburn" sounds odd. Reduce is not prevent: it means less, not none.

Antonyms and other verb pages

The opposite of prevent is allow, permit or let when you mean permission, and cause, enable or encourage when you mean making it happen.

  • The new law permits street food stalls.
  • Cheap loans enabled many small shops to open.

Both allow synonyms and action verbs carry this further.
