Fix Synonym Guide: Repair, Solve, Set and Attach

Action verbsVerbNounUpdated 26 Oct 2026

A fix synonym only works if it matches the job: repair and mend are for broken objects, solve and resolve are for problems, correct is for mistakes, and set or arrange is for dates and prices. Fix covers all of these in speech, but on paper, another word for fix should name the exact job.

Each sense gets its own swaps further down, along with the forms fixed and fixing, the noun uses (a quick fix, in a fix) and the opposite words for when things fall apart.

From sort out to rectify

In the chip row, sort out is the most relaxed and rectify the stiffest. Sort out sounds friendly and is very British, while Americans often say take care of. Patch up suggests a quick, partial repair, and it also works for relationships: they patched up their friendship. Repair is neutral. Resolve sounds professional and fits complaints, disputes and tickets. Rectify tops the formality scale and usually turns up in official letters about errors.

Synonyms for fixed, fixing and fixes

The swaps keep the same tense as the original verb.

  • I fixed the sink becomes I repaired the sink.
  • We are fixing the issue becomes we are resolving the issue or working on a solution.
  • She fixes old radios becomes she restores old radios.

As an adjective, fixed means unchanging: a fixed price, a fixed stare. Swaps there are set, firm, constant and steady, all unrelated to repair.

Work emails and support replies

Customers and managers want to know the result, so a precise verb helps.

Support reply draft: "We fixed the problem with your account." Clearer: "We have resolved the login error on your account, and you can sign in again now." Resolved sounds settled, and naming the issue shows you understood it.

For internal updates, address means you are dealing with something but may not be finished. That makes it useful when a full fix is still on the way, and the handle page has similar verbs.

Fix as a noun

A fix can mean a solution: a quick fix, a temporary fix. Swaps are solution, remedy, workaround (for a partial one) and patch (in software).

In a fix means in trouble. Swap with in a jam, in a bind, in a pickle (playful) or in a predicament (formal).

  • I'm in a real fix becomes I'm in a real bind.

Tempting but wrong swaps for fix

Improve makes something better but does not mean it was broken. Change is neutral and may not solve anything. Fixate means to focus obsessively, not to repair. Adjust means a small change to get something right, close to fine-tune, not a full repair.

Antonyms of fix

For repair, the opposites are break, damage, wreck and ruin. For a problem, worsen or aggravate. For attaching, loosen, detach and unfasten. Stronger words for wrecking things live on the destroy page, and the action verbs collection gathers more.

Frequently asked questions

Repair or solve: which synonym for fix do I need?

Repair and solve are the two main ones. Use repair for objects and solve or resolve for problems.

Fix sounds casual; what is the formal version?

Rectify and remedy are the most formal. Resolve is formal but common enough for everyday work emails.

Fixed it: how else can I say that?

Repaired it, sorted it out and resolved it are good swaps. Pick the one that fits the object or problem you mean.

Fix and its antonyms: which ones matter?

Break is the most direct antonym. Damage, worsen and detach cover the other senses.

What does quick fix mean?

A fast solution that may not last. Stopgap, makeshift solution and temporary measure carry the same idea.

Can I use correct instead of fix?

Yes when you mean a mistake, such as an error in a report. For a broken machine, repair sounds more natural.
