Answer Synonym Guide for Replies, Solutions and Comebacks

Action verbsNoun and verbEmail wordUpdated 26 Oct 2026

An answer synonym has to match two very different jobs, because answer can be the words you send back (reply, respond, response) or the thing that solves a problem (solution, explanation). Because the word doubles as noun and verb, spot its role in your line before swapping.

The groups below split those roles apart. You will also find help with answers synonym choices for quiz sheets and survey results, the sharper words for a quick comeback, and the odd phrasal uses like answer for and answer to.

Answer synonym table: replying versus solving

WordRoleExample
replyverb or noun, words sent backShe replied within an hour.
respondverb, a bit more formalThe council will respond to every comment.
responsenoun, any reactionThe survey got a strong response.
retortverb or noun, quick and sharp"Not my job," he retorted.
solutionnoun, solves a problemA rotation was the solution to the parking fights.
explanationnoun, makes a mystery clearThere is a simple explanation for the noise.

Tone ladder for replying

Left to right, the chips at the top get more formal. Get back to is relaxed and promises a later reply: I will get back to you tomorrow. Write back suits letters and messages. Reply is neutral. Respond sounds official and suits customer service, policy and press notes. Rejoin is literary and means a quick reply, usually in a debate.

One grammar point catches many learners. You answer a person or a message directly, but you reply to it and respond to it.

Swapping the verb in emails and chat

  • Please answer by Friday becomes please reply by Friday.
  • Thanks for answering so fast becomes thanks for getting back to me so fast.
  • We will answer all questions becomes we will respond to all questions or address all questions.
  • Nobody answered becomes nobody picked up for a phone call.

A support agent drafts: "We will answer your complaint and answer any follow-up." Using two verbs keeps it from echoing: "We will respond to your complaint and handle any follow-up." The address synonyms page lists further verbs for handling a concern.

Answers synonym ideas for tests, surveys and puzzles

For the plural, the right word depends on where the answers came from. On a quiz, try responses or solutions: check your solutions on page twelve. In a survey, responses and results work best. For a riddle or crossword, solutions or the key sounds natural, and an answer key is a list of the correct ones.

When people need help with a hard topic, explanations is often the better word: the guide gives clear explanations, not just answers.

Comebacks, retorts and snappy replies

When the reply is quick and a little cheeky, plain answer loses the spark. Comeback is casual and often admiring: she had a great comeback. Retort is sharper, sometimes angry. Fire back is informal and fast. Rejoinder is formal and suits written debate or reviews.

These words describe tone, so only use them when the reply really had an edge. A polite reply to an invite is not a retort.

Answer for, answer to and answer the need

Several phrases carry their own meanings. Answer for means to be held responsible: someone must answer for the delay, which can become be accountable for or take responsibility for. Answer to means to report to: she answers to the director, or she reports to the director. Answer a need means to satisfy it: the new bus line answers a real need becomes meets a real need.

For problems, resolve synonyms such as settle and sort out are useful neighbors.

Opposites: asking and ignoring

As a verb, the natural opposites are ask, question and query, plus ignore when the opposite is no reply at all. As a noun meaning solution, the opposite is the problem or puzzle itself. See the question synonyms page for that side of the pair.

  • She asked twice, but he ignored the message.
  • The puzzle stayed open for a week.

Frequently asked questions

Is reply or respond better in a formal email?

Both are fine. Respond sounds a touch more official, while reply feels warmer. Avoid get back to in very formal letters.

Which word fits a clever, quick answer?

Comeback is the casual choice, and retort suggests a sharper edge. In formal writing, rejoinder works.

How do I say answer in the sense of a solution?

Use solution, fix or way out. Solution is the most neutral, fix is casual and way out suggests escaping a tight spot.

Do I need to after reply?

Yes. Write reply to the message or reply to her. Answer is the verb that takes the object directly, as in answer the message.

Is there an antonym of answer?

Question and ask are the main opposites. If you mean not replying, ignore is the closest antonym.

Can response replace answers in a survey report?

Yes, and the report flows more smoothly: we received 300 responses. Results works when you mean the summary of those responses.
