Question Synonym Guide: Words for Asking, Issues and Doubt

Nouns and ideasNounVerbUpdated 26 Oct 2026

Picking a question synonym depends on which question you have in mind: a query or inquiry is something asked, an issue or matter is a subject people need to settle, and doubt is the question hanging over a claim. As a verb, ask, probe and challenge do most of the work.

The noun and the verb behave differently, so this page splits them. Further down sit words for the plural, questions, a scale from gentle asking to hard grilling, and the opposites.

Which question synonym fits your sense?

Another word for question only works if it shares the meaning you intend. Four meanings cover nearly every case:

MeaningTrySample line
Something you askquery, inquiry, poserSend your query to the front desk.
A subject to settleissue, matter, pointPay is a separate matter.
A doubtdoubt, uncertainty, disputeThere is no doubt about her skill.
An exam itemitem, exercise, problem, promptAnswer the third prompt in full.

If the sentence is about something hard to fix, a problem or concern may be closer than any of these.

Query, inquiry or enquiry?

Query is short and neutral, the usual choice for a customer email or a help ticket. Inquiry can mean one question, but it also names a formal investigation, as in a public inquiry into a failed bridge. Enquiry is the same word spelled the British way, often kept for simple requests for information.

Poser is a tricky question or puzzle and sounds a little playful. Interrogative belongs to grammar lessons: a sentence that ends in a question mark is in the interrogative form.

Verbs: from asking politely to grilling

Those five chips near the top climb in pressure as you move rightward. Ask is plain. Inquire is the polite, slightly formal version. Query as a verb often hints that you think something is wrong: she queried the bill. Probe means digging for hidden facts, and interrogate suggests pressure, as police might apply to a suspect.

Quiz and grill are informal. Parents grill a teenager about a late night; friends quiz you about a new date. Interview fits a planned set of questions, such as for a job or a news story.

A manager writes: "I want to question the team about the delay." That can sound like a trial. "I want to ask the team about the delay" or "I want to check in with the team" keeps the tone calm.

Before and after swaps

  • I have a question about my order becomes I have a query about my order.
  • The question of funding is still open becomes the matter of funding is still open.
  • There is some question about the data becomes there is some doubt about the data.
  • Reporters questioned the mayor becomes reporters pressed the mayor.
  • Nobody questioned the plan becomes nobody challenged the plan.
  • That is not the question becomes that is not the point.

Questions synonym picks for the plural, questioned and questioning

For the plural noun, use queries, inquiries, issues or points. A list of questions at the end of a talk can be called Q and A or simply discussion.

For questions as a verb (she questions everything), use doubts, challenges or disputes. Questioned becomes asked, interviewed, examined or challenged. Questioning as an adjective means curious or doubtful: a questioning look can be a puzzled look, a skeptical look or an inquiring look. For a whole mindset of wanting to know, see curious synonyms.

Look-alikes that do not fit

Request means you want something done, not just told. "I have a request" and "I have a question" lead to different replies. Problem suggests trouble, so calling a simple query a problem can worry the reader. Riddle is a puzzle with a clever answer, not a real inquiry. And topic is a subject for talk, while a question needs a decision or an answer.

Opposites: answers and certainty

The opposite of a question is an answer, reply or response. When question means doubt, the opposite is certainty: her loyalty is beyond doubt. As a verb, its reverse is to accept or trust it.

Frequently asked questions

Which word replaces question in a customer email?

Query is the safest choice: I have a quick query about the invoice. Inquiry works too but sounds a bit more formal.

Which verb sounds formal when you ask something?

Inquire is the polite formal verb. If you mean you doubt something, call into question or dispute sound formal and precise.

Does issue work in place of question?

Yes, when question means a subject to be settled: the issue of parking. Not when you mean something you ask, since I have an issue sounds like a complaint.

What is the opposite of question?

Answer, reply and response are the usual opposites. For the doubt sense, certainty or acceptance is the opposite.

What does it mean to call something into question?

It means to raise doubt about it. New results can call an old theory into question without proving it wrong.

Is quiz a synonym for question?

As a verb, yes, in a light and informal way: she quizzed me about the trip. As a noun, a quiz is a short test made of several questions.
