Response Synonym Finder: Replies, Reactions and Actions

Nouns and ideasNounEmail wordUpdated 26 Oct 2026

A good response synonym hinges on what came back: words, feelings or actions. For a written or spoken return, reply and answer are the safe picks. For how a group felt, choose reaction, feedback or reception. For something done to fix a problem, try measure or action.

The sections below explain each sense with a table, a formality strip, real email and essay swaps, and the antonyms. Related pages include answer synonyms and feedback synonyms.

Retort means a quick, often angry reply. Do not use it for a polite email.

Three things a response can be

Think of the word as a return. Sometimes the return is language: a reply to a text, an answer on a test. Sometimes it is feeling: the crowd's reaction, the public reception of a new policy. And sometimes it is action: the city's measures after a flood. Each group has its own best synonyms, and mixing them up gives odd sentences such as the government's reply to the flood.

From comeback to rejoinder

Tone rises across the color strip as you read it, starting relaxed and ending formal. A comeback is playful or cheeky, the sort of thing you trade with friends. A reply is neutral and suits nearly every setting. An answer sounds slightly more complete. Feedback belongs to offices and classrooms. A rejoinder is bookish and usually means a reply to a criticism or argument, often in print.

Swapping it in emails and essays

  • I look forward to your response becomes I look forward to your reply or I hope to hear back soon.
  • The response to the new menu was positive becomes the reception of the new menu was positive.
  • The audience response was loud becomes the audience reaction was loud.
  • The school's response to bullying becomes the school's measures against bullying.
  • We received over two hundred responses becomes we received over two hundred replies, or entries for a survey or contest.

An essay sentence: "The response of the public showed that the response of the mayor was too slow." Splitting the senses fixes the repeat: "The public reaction showed that the mayor's action came too late."

Near misses to avoid

Result and outcome name the final state of things, not the act of responding, so they only fit science contexts like the patient's response to treatment. Solution claims the problem is solved, which a response may not do. Statement is a public announcement and may not answer anything at all. For more on the last one, see statement synonyms.

The opposite side of the exchange

A response needs something to answer, so its antonyms are the starting points: question, query, inquiry, request and prompt. In science, the pair is stimulus and response. When there is no return at all, the word you want is silence: her email met with silence. See also question synonyms and request synonyms.

Phrases that do the same work

Sometimes a phrase reads better than a single noun. In reply to and in answer to suit formal letters. Word back is relaxed: any word back from the landlord? Take means opinion in chat: so, your take on the new schedule? A follow-up is a later reply that adds detail.

Frequently asked questions

What is another word for response in an email?

Reply is the most natural choice in emails. You can also write I hope to hear back soon, which avoids the noun entirely.

Which response synonym is most formal?

Acknowledgment works when you confirm you received something. Rejoinder is formal and literary, used for a reply to an argument.

Is reaction the same as response?

They overlap, but reaction suggests something quick and emotional. A response can be slow and planned, like a written policy.

What do you call a clever quick response?

A retort, a comeback or, in more literary writing, a riposte. All three suggest wit or a bit of an edge.

What is the opposite of response?

Question, query and request are the usual antonyms. In science, stimulus is the term that comes before a response.

Can I use feedback instead of response?

Only when the response is an opinion meant to help improve something. Feedback on a draft works, but feedback to a fire alarm does not.
