Some join two nouns, some start a new sentence, and a few change which verb you need. This guide groups the options by job, explains the grammar traps and shows when plain and is still the right word, which is more often than you might expect.

Grammar that changes with the swap
Verb agreement. "Sam and Lee are late" has a plural subject. Swap in as well as or along with and the subject becomes Sam alone: "Sam, as well as Lee, is late." The added part sits between commas.
Verb form. Mid sentence, match the verb after as well as to the main verb: "She sings as well as plays the piano." If as well as comes first, the verb takes -ing: "As well as playing the piano, she sings."

Can you start a sentence with and
Yes. Careful writers have done it for centuries, and style guides accept it. Starting with And gives a sentence weight, as if adding a final point: "The plan is cheap. And it works." Use it sparingly in formal essays, where some readers still frown on it.
If you want a safer opener, try additionally, also or moreover.
When to keep plain and
And is short, clear and almost invisible to readers. In a simple list of two things, it is nearly always the best choice. Replacing it with together with or coupled with in "salt and pepper" just slows the reader down.
Swap only when and appears three times in one sentence, when you want to stress the last item, or when the link is really about order or contrast. The ampersand (&) belongs in names, headings and notes, not in running text.
