Before you choose an emotional synonym, decide who or what is emotional: a person can be moved, tearful or sensitive, while a speech or scene is touching, moving or poignant. Mixing the two is the most common slip, as in "a moved film".
Below, the words are split into those groups, ranked by intensity and tested in sentences. Related nouns are on the emotion synonyms and feeling synonyms pages.

Intensity: touched to distraught
The strip across the top moves from light to overwhelming. Touched is a small warm reaction. Moved goes deeper. Tearful means tears are visible. Overcome means the feeling has taken over for a moment. Distraught is the extreme end, used for someone deeply upset and unable to cope.
Note that the first three are often positive, while distraught is always painful. If the emotion is distress, the upset synonyms and overwhelmed synonyms pages fit better.
Emotional in sentences, then improved
- She got emotional at the wedding becomes she got teary at the wedding.

A mentor receives a thank-you card that reads: "Your words were very emotional for me." The better version is "Your words truly moved me." Moved puts the feeling where it belongs, in the reader, and sounds sincere.
Positive, neutral or critical?
Some words praise, some judge. Passionate and sensitive often sound like compliments; see passionate synonyms and sensitive synonyms. Moody, volatile and temperamental suggest feelings that change fast and cause trouble. Hysterical is best avoided, since it has been used unfairly to dismiss people, especially women. When describing a colleague, prefer neutral words such as expressive or open.
Workplace and formal writing
In reports, psychological or mental can replace emotional when you mean the inner effect of something: the psychological impact of the move. Researchers sometimes use affective, a technical term for anything related to mood. For a reference letter, words like empathetic, warm and expressive praise emotional skill without sounding soft.
Antonyms of emotional
Unemotional and detached are neutral to cool. Calm and composed praise someone who stays steady. Stoic admires quiet endurance. Cold and impassive can sound critical.
- She stayed composed through the interview.
- His stoic face gave nothing away.
For steadier words, browse calm synonyms.
