End Synonym Guide: Words for Finishing, Edges and Goals

Nouns and ideasNoun and verbEssay wordUpdated 26 Oct 2026

An end synonym can be a noun or a verb, so check how your sentence uses it first. As a noun, conclusion, finish and close are the safest picks. As a verb, try finish, stop, conclude or wrap up.

End also names the tip of an object (the end of a rope) and a goal (a means to an end), and those senses call for different replacements. We cover ended and ending as well, since those forms turn up in almost every essay and email.

Ending, ended and ends

Ending as a noun means how a story or event turns out: a happy ending, a twist ending. Swap it for outcome, resolution or finale. Ended as a past verb becomes finished, concluded or came to a close. In the plural, ends can mean aims: political ends, private ends, which you can replace with goals or interests.

To start a final paragraph, try the transitions on the in conclusion synonyms page rather than writing "in the end" every time.

Frequently asked questions

Which end word suits a formal report?

What is the opposite of end?

Beginning and start for the noun; begin, start and commence for the verb.
