The noun: shape, sort or sheet

For the physical sense, shape is the everyday swap, outline and silhouette suit something seen from a distance, and structure fits buildings or molecules. For the sense of category, type and kind are neutral, version suggests a variant of one original, and mode suits transport or communication. For paperwork, application, questionnaire and survey say what the document is for.

There is also form meaning fitness or recent performance, as in "the team is in good form". Here shape and condition are the natural swaps; fettle is British and old-fashioned.

The verb: from make to constitute

Our paint chip row ranks five verb swaps by register. Make and put together are casual. Shape adds a sense of molding something over time. Establish is formal and fits groups, rules and companies. Constitute belongs to formal registers and means being the parts of a whole.

  • Students formed a group becomes students set up a group.
  • The rocks form a wall becomes the rocks make up a wall.
  • Ice formed on the road becomes ice built up on the road.
  • Form a habit becomes build a habit.
  • Form an opinion becomes develop a view or arrive at an opinion.

Forms, formed and forming

Forms as a noun is usually paperwork: "the forms are on the desk" becomes "the documents are on the desk". Formed as a verb in the past swaps well with created, founded or developed: "the band formed in a garage" becomes "the band got together in a garage". Forming often means taking shape: "clouds are forming" becomes "clouds are gathering".

A history essay: "The alliance was formed to stop the invasion." Try "The alliance was founded to stop the invasion." Founded points to a deliberate start by named people, which suits a political group better than the vaguer formed.

Mix-ups to avoid

Format describes layout or file type, so a "PDF format" is not a "PDF form". Formation is the act or the arrangement, such as a rock formation or a flying formation, not a sheet you sign. Comprise and compose both relate to make up, but comprise takes the whole as subject: the panel comprises six people, while six people compose the panel. Style fits art and writing but not machines or animals.

An office message: "Please send the form in the right form." Rewriting it as "Please send the application as a PDF" removes the double use and tells the reader exactly what to do.

Opposites of form

The verb has clear antonyms: destroy, demolish and dismantle for things, and dissolve, disband and break up for groups.

  • The club disbanded after its last season.
  • Workers dismantled the stage overnight.

The destroy synonyms page has stronger choices for wrecking things.

Frequently asked questions

Which word can replace form when I mean a document?

Application, questionnaire and paperwork are the most common. Choose whichever label tells people its purpose, such as a registration sheet or a feedback survey.

How do I say form a team on a resume?

Built, assembled or established a team all work. Assembled stresses picking the right people, while established suggests a new, lasting unit.

Is shape always a safe swap for form?

For the physical sense, yes. It does not replace form meaning a type or a document, so shape of transport would sound wrong.

Does constitute mean the same as form?

Only in the make up sense: these units constitute the army. It is formal and suits essays and legal writing.

Which antonyms go with the verb form?

Destroy and dismantle work for objects. Dissolve, disband and break up work for groups and partnerships.
