Before choosing a job synonym, decide if you mean the post you were hired for or one thing on today's list. For paid work, position, role and post are the standard swaps; for your field over many years, occupation or career; for a single piece of work, task or assignment. That is the whole trick.
Below you get each group with examples, a casual to formal strip, advice for resumes and a few traps. Hiring vocabulary such as role and task sits with the rest of our hiring and office vocabulary.

Career is the whole path, not one employer. You change jobs more often than careers.
Hired for it or doing it today?
Job has two main senses that rarely swap. The first is employment, as in she got a job at the bakery. The second is a piece of work, as in fixing the gate was a quick job. A third sense, duty, shows up in phrases like it is my job to lock up.
| Sense | Swap | Line |
|---|---|---|
| Employment | position, role, post | She accepted a post at the museum. |
| Life's work | occupation, profession, career | His occupation is listed as nurse. |
| Single piece of work | task, chore, assignment | Painting the hall is a weekend chore. |
| Duty | responsibility, function | Locking up is my responsibility. |
Gig to appointment: tone on the strip
Gig is slang, first for musicians and now for short freelance work. Work is plain and uncountable, so say I found work, not I found a work. Role is the modern hiring word, popular in listings. Position is a notch more formal and fits cover letters. Appointment is the stiffest, used for senior or official posts such as a judge or a professor.
The job synonym recruiters expect
Recruiters expect position and role. Write I am applying for the position of data analyst, or in my previous role I led a team of four. Avoid gig on a resume unless the field is music or freelance work where the word is normal.
A cover letter opens: "I saw your job for a sales assistant." Changing it to "I saw your opening for a sales assistant" sounds natural, because opening and vacancy are the words for a job that is not filled yet.
For the work itself, verbs often beat nouns. See work synonyms and project synonyms for wording that describes what you did.
Real sentences, swapped
- He lost his job in spring becomes he lost his position in spring.
- What is your job becomes what is your occupation on a form, or what do you do in conversation.
- Cleaning the oven is a messy job becomes cleaning the oven is a messy chore.
- The new hire has a tough job ahead becomes the new hire has a tough task ahead.
- It is not my job to check that becomes checking that is not my responsibility.
Jobs in the plural
For jobs as in work available, use openings, vacancies or positions: the plant will create two hundred positions. For jobs as tasks, chores suits home life and tasks suits work: I have a few chores before dinner. Odd jobs, small paid repairs around a house, has no neat single word swap; handyman work comes closest.
Words that look close but are not
Career describes many years in a field, so I started a new career means a new field, not just a new employer. Profession usually means work that needs long training, like law or medicine, and may sound odd for a summer job. Vocation and calling suggest you feel drawn to the work, which suits teaching or nursing but is too grand for most part-time work.
Antonyms and the space around work
Job has no exact opposite, but the lack of one is unemployment or joblessness, both used in reports. For time away from tasks, leisure, rest and free time fill the gap: weekends are for rest, not for chores.
Frequently asked questions
Which job word sounds most polished?
Position and role are the most professional everyday choices. Occupation is the word on forms, and appointment is reserved for senior or official posts.
What is another word for job on a resume?
Use role or position in headings and summaries, such as role: project coordinator. Describe the work with action verbs rather than repeating the noun.
Is career the same as job?
No. A job is one position with one employer, while a career is the path you follow across many jobs in a field.
What do you call a small job?
Task, chore or errand, depending on the setting. A quick paid job gets called a gig by most people.
Does job have an antonym?
Unemployment describes having no job. For a task, the contrast is free time or rest.
Can I say work instead of job?
Yes, but work is uncountable, so drop the article: I need work, not I need a work. Work also covers the effort itself, which job does not.
