Large Synonym Guide: Words for Size, Amount and Scale

Describing wordsAdjectiveDescribing wordUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The best large synonym depends on what is large: big and huge suit objects, substantial and considerable suit money and numbers, spacious suits rooms, and vast suits land, sea and data. Large itself is a slightly formal, neutral word, so most swaps make a sentence either warmer or more vivid.

Below, each group of size words gets a ranking and a few real sentences to test it in. A short section covers tactful words for body size, and another lists idioms like by and large that only look related.

Size is not always physical. Start from your noun and scan across.

Sizable to colossal

Those five colored chips grow in force as they go. Sizable says fairly large, a step above average. Big is the plain everyday word. Huge adds emphasis and a little emotion. Enormous suggests something unusually large, often surprising. Colossal belongs to statues, failures and costs so big they are hard to picture.

Inflation is common with size words. If every crowd is enormous, the reader stops believing you. Keep the top of the scale for when it is earned, and use immense when you want strength with a formal tone.

Swapping large in sentences

  • A large amount of money becomes a substantial sum of money.
  • A large number of students becomes many students or numerous students.
  • A large house becomes a spacious house or a sprawling house.
  • A large impact becomes a significant impact or a far-reaching impact.
  • Large portions at dinner becomes generous portions.
  • A large dog becomes a big dog, which sounds more natural in speech.

A real estate listing reads "large rooms and a large yard." Changing it to "spacious rooms and a sprawling yard" avoids the repeat and helps buyers picture the space.

Big or large: which sounds better

Big feels warmer, and people say it far more often aloud. Large sounds measured and appears in sizes, statistics and formal writing: a large coffee, a large sample. Big can also mean important (a big decision) or older (my big sister), and large cannot. Large, in turn, pairs with amount, number, scale and proportion, where big would sound casual.

For quantities in an essay, many writers prefer substantial or considerable, or simply numerous for countable things.

Kind words for body size

Describing a person as large can sound blunt. Context matters, so choose a word that fits what you mean and how the person would hear it. Tall refers only to height, so it says nothing about bulk. Broad-shouldered, well-built and strapping suggest strength. Heavyset and stocky are neutral descriptions. Plus-size is the standard clothing term.

Avoid words like fat or obese in casual description, which many people find hurtful. In most writing, the kindest option is to mention size only when it matters to the story.

Phrases with large and the small side

Some fixed phrases do not mean big at all. At large means free or uncaught (two goats from the petting farm are at large) or in general (society at large). By and large means mostly. Larger than life describes a bold, colorful personality. Living large is slang for living in luxury.

On the other side of the scale: small, little, tiny, compact and modest. A compact car, a modest budget, a tiny studio. The small synonyms page sorts those by shade, while the describing words section gathers adjectives of every kind.

Frequently asked questions

Which large synonym fits formal writing?

Substantial and considerable are the standard formal choices for amounts. For space, try extensive or capacious.

Which words are bigger than large?

Enormous, immense, gigantic and colossal are all stronger. Colossal is the most dramatic and suits costs, mistakes and monuments.

Can I use huge instead of large?

Yes, when you want more emphasis. Huge sounds informal and emotional, so in a report, substantial or major is usually better.

What is another word for large in an essay?

Use substantial for amounts, significant for effects and extensive for areas or research. Avoid stacking very large, since one exact word reads better.

What antonym of large should I use?

Small is the direct antonym. Little, tiny, compact and modest are common alternatives depending on tone.

What does at large mean?

It can mean not yet caught, as with an escaped animal, or in general, as in the public at large. Neither sense is about size.
