Quick Synonym Guide: Speed, Short Time and Sharp Minds

Describing wordsAdjectiveEveryday wordUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The quick synonym you need may be fast, rapid or swift for speed, brief for something that takes little time, prompt for a reply without delay, or sharp for a mind that catches on fast. A quick runner, a quick chat and a quick answer each need a different swap.

Fast and quick overlap a lot, but they are not always interchangeable. You take a quick look, not a fast look, and you drive a fast car, not usually a quick one. The notes below explain why. Related pages: fast, quickly and smart.

Brisk to lightning-fast: the speed ladder

The chips climb in speed. Brisk is lively but controlled, like a brisk walk on a cold day. Fast is the plain everyday word. Rapid sounds more formal and suits growth, change or decline. Swift adds smoothness and often a sense of decisive action. Lightning-fast is informal and very strong.

Reports lean on rapid and swift: rapid growth, swift response. In speech, fast and speedy feel more natural.

Quick and fast are not twins

Quick often describes a short action or a short time: a quick question, a quick shower, a quick break. Fast more often describes the speed of something that keeps moving: a fast train, a fast runner, fast internet.

So a quick lunch is a short lunch, but a fast lunch sounds like you ate at speed. When you swap, ask whether you mean short in time or high in speed. If short, reach for brief or short. If speedy, reach for fast or rapid.

Quick swaps in emails and texts

  • Just a quick question becomes just a brief question or one short question.
  • Thanks for the quick reply becomes thanks for the prompt reply.
  • A quick decision on the venue becomes a swift decision on the venue.
  • She is very quick in meetings becomes she is very sharp in meetings.
  • Can we have a quick call becomes can we have a short call.

Email to a manager: "Quick update: the quick fix for the login bug is live." Change the second quick: "Quick update: the temporary fix for the login bug is live." Temporary is more exact, and the echo disappears.

For the adverb, the quickly synonyms page covers rapidly, swiftly and promptly, and immediately covers instant timing.

When a swap goes wrong

Hasty and hurried both suggest too much speed and too little care. Cursory means quick and shallow, so a cursory review is a weak review. Sudden is about surprise, not speed. Efficient means no waste, which is related but different; see efficient synonyms.

Nippy is British and casual, and it can also mean chilly, as in a nippy morning.

Slow and steady: antonyms of quick

The direct opposite is slow, which has its own list of synonyms. Sluggish suggests low energy, as in a sluggish laptop. Lengthy and long oppose quick in the time sense. Leisurely and unhurried are positive, describing a relaxed pace. Dull opposes quick in the clever sense.

  • We took a leisurely stroll along the canal.
  • The meeting was lengthy and unfocused.

Pace, manner and mood adjectives fill our describing words collection.

Frequently asked questions

Which quick synonym is the most formal?

Rapid and prompt are formal and widely understood. Expeditious goes further still, though it mostly lives in court papers and government letters.

Can I say a fast question instead of a quick question?

It sounds odd. Use quick, brief or short for a question, because the idea is short time, not speed.

How do you describe a person who is quick to learn?

Sharp, bright, alert and a fast learner all work. In a resume, quick learner is common, so adding a real example helps.

A quick reply has which opposite?

A slow, late or delayed reply. Delayed sounds the most neutral in a business email.

Is swift too old-fashioned for daily use?

Not at all, but it is a little formal. It fits news reports and work writing, such as a swift response from the council.
