A good same synonym must suit the grammar of your line too, not just the meaning, and plenty of swaps trip on that. The most useful choices are identical, alike, matching, equivalent and unchanged.
Same nearly always needs the in front of it (the same shirt), while most of its replacements do not (an identical shirt). Further down, every sense gets its own word set plus a closeness grading. After that come the fixed phrases built on same, such as at the same time and all the same.

Similar is weaker. Two cars can be similar without being the same model.
How close is each match?
Our paint chips grade closeness, loose on one end and exact on the other. Comparable only says two things can be measured against each other. Alike means they share a clear look or nature. Matching is about things made to go together, like socks or cushions. Equivalent means equal in value or effect, even if the form differs. Identical leaves no gap at all.
If you only mean close, the similar synonyms page is a better fit than any word here.
The same synonym list, sorted by sense
| Sense | Swap in | Sample line |
|---|---|---|
| Exactly alike | identical, indistinguishable, duplicate | The two copies are identical. |
| Equal amount | equal, equivalent, even, on a par | Both teams scored an equal number of goals. |
| Not changed | unchanged, constant, consistent | Her address is unchanged. |
| Already named | aforementioned, very, said | The aforementioned clause applies. |
The last group mostly belongs to legal writing and formal reports. In everyday prose, this or that usually does the job better.
Patterns that shift when you replace same
Same has its own patterns, and the synonyms bring different ones:
- the same as becomes identical to, equal to or equivalent to.
- they are the same becomes they are alike. Alike usually sits after the verb, so write two alike houses only in poetry.
- the same size becomes equal in size.
- stayed the same becomes stayed constant or remained unchanged.
Do not write the identical as. Identical takes to: this key is identical to that one.
Before and after
- Both reports reach the same conclusion becomes both reports reach an identical conclusion.
- Prices stayed the same all year becomes prices held steady all year.
- A degree or the same experience becomes a degree or equivalent experience.
- The twins wore the same coats becomes the twins wore matching coats.
- Her answer was the same as mine becomes her answer was identical to mine.
A job post reads: "Applicants need a diploma or the same." That sounds odd. "A diploma or equivalent" is the standard wording, because it means a different thing of equal value.

- in the same way: likewise, similarly.
- all the same: even so, nevertheless, still. The however page has more.
- same here (casual reply): me too, likewise.
