Suffering Synonym List: Words for Pain, Hardship and Distress

FeelingsNounSerious toneUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The most accurate suffering synonym depends on where the pain lives: pain and agony for the body, anguish and distress for the mind, and hardship for tough living conditions. Misery can cover all three.

Suffering is also a verb form (she is suffering from a cold), so you will find replacements for suffer, suffered and suffering from too. Because the topic is often serious, the notes on tone matter as much as the lists.

For body pain in particular, the pain synonyms page goes into more detail.

From discomfort to agony

Each chip up top marks a heavier load. Discomfort is something you notice but can work through. Distress shows that the person is upset or struggling. Misery means the whole experience is unhappy. Anguish is sharp, usually emotional, and agony is the extreme end, often physical.

Doctors and nurses tend to use the mild words on purpose. Asking about discomfort feels calmer than asking about agony, even when the pain is real.

Suffer, suffered and suffering from

The verb has its own set of swaps:

  • She is suffering from a migraine becomes she has a migraine or she is battling a migraine.
  • The town suffered heavy losses becomes the town sustained heavy losses.
  • He suffered in silence becomes he endured it quietly.
  • Sales suffered during the strike becomes sales dropped or sales took a hit (casual).
  • They suffered through years of war becomes they lived through years of war.

Notice that suffer can mean get worse, not only feel pain. In that sense, decline, slip or be harmed fits better than endure.

Tone: writing about real people

Health writers often avoid saying someone is suffering from a condition, because it can sound pitying. Living with, has or manages are neutral and respectful: "a man living with diabetes" rather than "a diabetes sufferer".

A charity report first said: "Families here suffer from hunger." The edit read: "Families here face constant food shortages." The new line keeps the seriousness, names the actual problem and treats the families as people, not victims.

In history or news, hardship, deprivation and adversity describe conditions without guessing at private feelings.

Suffering look-alikes with other meanings

Torture means pain caused on purpose by someone, so do not use it for a bad headache except as a joke. Grief is pain after a loss, not pain in general. Sacrifice is giving something up by choice, which is different from suffering forced on you. Stress is pressure, often milder; the stress synonyms page covers it.

The opposite of suffering

Relief comes first among antonyms since it marks the instant pain ends. Comfort and ease name a state without pain. Well-being is the formal, health-related choice.

  • The medicine brought quick relief.
  • After the move, they finally lived in comfort.

Browse comfort synonyms for gentler words in that direction.

Short phrases with the same weight

Plain phrases can carry deep meaning: a hard road, a heavy burden, a difficult chapter, a world of hurt (casual), a living nightmare (strong). For emotional pain in particular, look at hurt synonyms and sadness synonyms. When a sentence is about a long, uphill effort, hardship and struggle are often more precise.
