Through Synonym Choices for Every Sense of the Word

Linking wordsPrepositionLinking wordUpdated 26 Oct 2026

No single through synonym works everywhere, because through does at least five jobs. It can mean via or by means of (learn through practice), across (walk through the park), throughout (awake through the night), because of (lost through carelessness) and, in American English, until (open Monday through Friday).

Spot the job first, then swap. The tables below sort another word for through by meaning, point out where a swap breaks the sentence, and cover the casual sense of being through with something.

Tone: thanks to, via, by means of

The chips move from relaxed to formal for the method sense. Thanks to is warm and casual, and it usually credits something good. Via is short and neutral, ideal for routes and tools. By way of sounds a little formal and is common for travel. By means of is precise and suits reports. By virtue of tops the scale and points to a quality as the cause: she won by virtue of her experience.

If the result is bad, avoid thanks to unless you are being ironic. Write because of or due to instead.

Swaps in everyday writing

  • I found the job through a friend becomes I found the job via a friend.
  • We drove through the city becomes we drove across the city.
  • He slept through the storm becomes he slept throughout the storm.
  • They succeeded through hard work becomes they succeeded by means of hard work, or more naturally thanks to hard work.
  • The store is open Monday through Saturday becomes the store is open Monday to Saturday.
  • Are you through with the charger? becomes are you finished with the charger?

A project report reads: "Sales grew through a new referral program and through better ads." Revised: "Sales grew thanks to a new referral program and sharper ads." One strong link word replaces two weak ones.

Through, throughout and thorough

Throughout stresses every part of a time or place: flags hung throughout the town. Through can mean the same for time, but throughout sounds more complete. Thorough is a different word, an adjective meaning careful and complete (a thorough check); do not mix up the spelling. Threw is the past tense of throw and only sounds like through.

Thru is a casual spelling seen on road signs and in texts. Keep it out of essays, resumes and emails to clients.

Swaps that go wrong

Across fits flat or open spaces, not tight ones: you squeeze through a gap, not across it. Via works for routes and channels but not for long efforts: write through years of training, not via years of training. Because of can replace through only when it names a cause; in learn through mistakes, the idea is method, so try by making mistakes. For more ways to show cause, see because synonyms.

Which through replacements sound right in formal reports?

By means of fits the method sense, and owing to fits the cause sense. Throughout is the formal choice for a whole period of time.

Can I use via instead of through?

Does through have an opposite?
