Training Synonym Options for Jobs, Sport and Learning

Nouns and ideasNoun and verbWorkplaceUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The right training synonym turns on the setting. At work, instruction, coaching and onboarding describe how people learn the job; in sport, practice, drills and workouts describe the sweat; and a single event is a workshop, course or seminar.

Looking for another word for training as a verb form, as in "she is training new hires"? A separate block below handles coaching, teaching, preparing and drilling, along with resume wording and the difference between training and education.

Practice up to upskilling

Across the chip row, the feel shifts from gym bench to human resources office. Practice is what you do on your own or with a team. Coaching adds a person guiding you. Workshop is a hands-on group session. Instruction is formal teaching, common in manuals and policy. Upskilling is corporate language for adding new skills to a current role; it reads as jargon outside business writing.

Verb side: training, trained, train

When training is the verb form, swap in coaching, teaching, instructing, preparing or drilling.

  • She is training the new hires becomes she is coaching the new hires.
  • He trained for the marathon becomes he prepared for the marathon.
  • The sergeant trained the recruits becomes the sergeant drilled the recruits.
  • I trained my dog to sit becomes I taught my dog to sit.

A trained person is qualified, skilled or certified. The teach synonyms and guide synonyms pages carry these verbs further.

In a resume or performance review

Recruiters scan for scope. "Did training" says little. "Designed and led onboarding for 40 hires" or "Delivered monthly safety workshops" shows impact. If you attended rather than taught, list courses under Professional Development or Certifications.

Performance review line: "Provided training to the team." Rewritten: "Coached three junior analysts until each could run reports alone." Coached names the method, and the result proves it worked.

Training versus education and practice

Education is broad and builds general understanding; training is targeted and aims at one task. A nurse has a medical education and fire safety training. Practice is the repetition you do yourself, while training usually implies someone set the plan. Exercise fits fitness but not job skills.

A trainee is the person learning; a trainer is the person teaching. In sport, the trainer can also be a coach, and in health care, a trainer may treat injuries.

When there was none

No neat single antonym exists for this noun. Use inexperience for a person, lack of preparation for an event, and unpreparedness for a formal report. Neglect works when training was owed and skipped.

  • Inexperience, not carelessness, caused the error.
  • The audit flagged a lack of preparation among night staff.
