The strongest lead synonym for most work writing is head, direct, manage, guide or spearhead, and each one paints a slightly different picture of you in charge. Guide sounds patient, direct sounds hands-on, and spearhead says you started something new.
Lead also has noun senses (a three-point lead, a sales lead) and a past tense that people often misspell. This guide gives another word for lead in each sense, a separate list for led on a resume, and the antonyms.

Four ways to be the one who leads
Leading a team, leading a visitor down a hall, leading a race and leading to a result are four separate ideas. Match your replacement to the one you mean.
Another word for led on your resume
Recruiters skim, so the verb at the start of each bullet does a lot of work. Led is fine once, but four bullets in a row starting with it looks lazy. Rotate these instead.
- Spearheaded for something you launched: spearheaded a new onboarding program.
- Directed for running a function or budget: directed a team of nine engineers.
- Oversaw for supervision from above: oversaw three regional offices.
- Headed for a department or committee: headed the hiring panel.
- Coordinated for bringing groups together without formal authority.
- Championed for an idea you pushed until it was adopted.

How the chip scale works for lead
The five chips above move from casual to formal. Run is the chatty option, as in I run the night shift. Head up is still relaxed but sounds organized. Manage is the standard office word. Direct adds authority and planning. Spearhead is the boldest, used for a new push that you personally drove.
Formal is not always better. In a short status email, I am running the launch reads more naturally than I am spearheading the launch.

A cover letter line: "I led a project, led weekly meetings and led a team of five." Rewritten: "I spearheaded a pricing project, chaired weekly reviews and managed a team of five." Each verb now tells the reader something different.
Lead, led and leading: spelling traps
The metal lead rhymes with bed, and so does the past tense led. That shared sound is why so many people write she lead the team yesterday. The correct form is led.
For leads, the third person form, use heads, guides or directs. For leading as an adjective, try top, foremost, chief or principal: a leading expert becomes a foremost expert. The leading synonyms page goes deeper on that sense.
Tempting swaps that shift the sense
Command works for the military or for strong control, but it can sound harsh for an office team. Control is not leading at all, since you can control a budget without inspiring anyone. Boss as a verb is rude: bossing people around is the opposite of good leadership. And mislead is not a stronger lead, it means to deceive.

Antonyms of lead
The plain opposite is follow. In races and rankings, trail and lag mean being behind: the challenger trails by six points. Obey is the opposite of command.
- The new hire will follow the senior analyst for a week.
- Our team trailed for most of the game.
